We live in confusing times. The end of truth has been announced more than once, values that we thought were clear become unstable, while a cacophony of voices fights for attention. In all this noise some sounds are more difficult to hear than others. How can we continue from this variety to learn new things, what imaginative ways are available to us to live together? What techniques may we develop to do research with people who are less easy to hear, and to address tenacious problems-that-do-not-go-away?

On this cheerful festival artists, social scientists and philosophers, together with the audience, explore ways to build bridges and create new connections. The festival shows inspiring examples from the arts and the sciences to create different perspectives on vulnerability and complex situations that we care about. This will reveal persistent attempts to improve situations –even against the odds.

The festival will be introduced with the inaugural lecture of Jeannette Pols will be on June 29 2023 (Lutherse Kerk), 15.30 sharp, followed by the festival ‘Unexpected Subjects.’, in the theater room of the OBA Oosterdok (Next to Amsterdam Central Station).

Once a year, a Mingler Scholarship is made available for a collaboration between a academic and an artist by the Society of Arts and The Young Academy of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. The Scholarship consists of an amount of €10,000 (ten thousand euros), provided by the Niemeijer Foundation. Only one scholarship will be awarded. ​For the Mingler Scholarship 2023 artists and researchers who work in the field of the Humanities and Social Sciences are encouraged to apply for the Mingler Scholarship 2023.

Getting a PhD in the Arts is now possible in Limburg. It can be done in Merian. A collaboration in the area of artistic research between Zuyd Hogeschool, Maastricht Univeristy and the Jan van Eyk Academie. 

MERIAN will be launched in the coming academic year as a space for collaborative research in between making and thinking. PhD candidates engage in innovative styles of research, utilizing the powers and fragilities of artistic and scientific practices. Their research addresses urgent matters of societal concern apparent in the Meuse-Rhine Euregion. This collaboration between Maastricht University, Zuyd Hogeschool and the Jan van Eyck Academie builds on existing expertise from the research, arts and higher education networks in Maastricht. The distinct Maastricht style of ‘research in and through the arts’ is problem-based, methodologically innovative, and focuses on interdisciplinary topics that can fruitfully be explored across the arts and academia.
